Pumpkin Investigation

I am still sorting through bowling pictures and promise to post them soon. In the meantime, we did a math/science investigation with a pumpkin today. Mrs. Frankie, our student teacher from Coastal, taught this lesson to the kids. She did great and the kids loved it! First they held it and decided if it was heavy or light. They guessed how many lines were on the pumpkin and then counted them. They measured how tall it was and the width of it. The best part was cleaning it out and counting the seeds. Each kid got their hands dirty and helped clean it. Their faces were hilarious! We counted 595 seeds!! We couldn't believe how many seeds there were! Enjoy the pictures.

The Great Southeastern EarthQuake Drill

In Thursday all schools in Horry County participated in the Great Southeastern Earthquake Drill. I explained to the kids ahead of time of why we had to practice and what they needed to do. Mrs. Frankie, a student teacher from Coastal Carolina University, have a demonstration so they would know what to do exactly. We talked about how it was important to stay quiet and wait for the drill to be over. Our class did a wonderful job. They were patient and quiet as they sat balled up underneath their desks.

Adjectives

Last week we learned about adjectives and using them to make our writing better. We wrote stories about what it would be like in a haunted house. We thought about what we might would hear, see, feel, or smell in a house that was haunted. They did an awesome job with these stories and had fun writing them. When they finished their published draft, they made a haunted house and added their details to the pictures. I hung their masterpieces in the hall and decorated with spiderwebs. Here are some pictures of them working. I will try to remember to take a picture of the final pieces outside the classroom on Monday.

Penny Plate Game

Last week we learned about pennies and nickels. The kids were introduced to the Penny Plate game. With this game they work with a partner. They have 10 pennies and put some under a plate and the rest on top of it. Their partner has to count how many are on top and using what they know about how to make 10,determine how many are under the plate.
